We would have let Cariappa's era continue for 21 days.

Would have freed Kashmir from their hands

  Army Day is celebrated every year on 15 January because on this day the Indian Army got an Indian commander. When the country became independent, Lieutenant General KM Cariappa, the senior most officer of the Indian Army at that time, was not made the commander on the grounds that he lacked experience. At that time British General Roy Butcher was the Commander in Chief of the Indian Army. However, questions were raised whether the Prime Minister has the experience of being the Prime Minister?

October 1947-48, in the war between India and Pakistan for Kashmir, the Indian Army under the leadership of Lieutenant General Cariappa had taken back the areas of Zojila, Dras, Kargil etc. and Cariappa had said to give more time for three weeks (21) days. If given, the snatched part of Kashmir will be taken back by Pakistan. But on January 1, 1949, ceasefire was declared.

On January 15, 1949, Britain's General Roy Butcher handed over the charge of commander to India's Lieutenant General KM Cariappa. If Cariappa had been made a general at the time of independence, the ceasefire would have stopped for 15 days.

Field Marshal Cariappa's son's aircraft was shot down in Pakistan on the last day of the 1965 war and he was taken prisoner. Pakistan President Ayub Khan was a subordinate officer of Field Marshal Cariappa. He proposed to release Cariappa's son but Field Marshal Cariappa rejected it saying that all the soldiers in the army were his sons. The words of such a commander were not listened to while declaring ceasefire. Why ?
